Learning in silos vs holistic learning

It’s common for academics to separate one concept from another in order to teach something specific. This is useful for understanding specific parts compared to the whole.

For example, understanding how axles work in isolation is extremely useful for understanding how modern cars work as a whole.

But the academic system as a whole has put itself in a silo away from the world.

This has a rather harmful distorted effect on young people.

Young college students get to experience the “what” of their studies without learning the “how” or the “why”.

How do I apply what I’ve learned?

Why does one professor who I didn’t want to be my professor get to judge whether my work is good or not?

Why don’t I create real things and put them out into the world to see if they’re good?

Without the connection to the real world, college students are unfairly thrust into a world that they weren’t prepared for. They spend so much time in a silo learning about ideas, that they never take the time to see if those ideas were applicable in the real world.
